Performing Arts

At BEPS, we are committed to fostering creativity and self-expression through our innovative music and drama programs. These programs play a vital role in our school community, providing students with opportunities to explore, create, and perform while developing skills that will stay with them for a lifetime.

Music

Our music program is designed to build musical literacy and cultivate a love for music. Students engage in a variety of activities including singing, playing instruments, listening, responding, composing, and improvising.

Drama

Drama is just as integral to the BEPS experience. Students learn to express ideas, explore different performance techniques, and interpret various roles and genres. Drama sessions focus on everything from improvisation and ensemble building to puppetry and performance skills, allowing each student to explore their creative potential in unique and exciting ways.

Performance

Beyond the classroom, students have the chance to participate in and contribute to school events such as the Junior School Film Festival and major school productions. Over the years, our productions have included classic works like The Comedy of Errors, Twelfth Night, and Much Ado About Nothing, as well as entirely student-devised productions like the 2024 musical The Android Academy. These performances allow students to take on multiple roles – from scriptwriting and composing songs to set design and acting – giving them a complete creative experience.

At BEPS, students can get involved in a wide range of activities that encourage self-expression, collaboration, and a deeper understanding of the arts:

  • Improvisation and building drama and music ensembles
  • Puppetry and exploring musical instruments
  • Junior and Senior Choirs
  • Shakespeare performances through the Bell Shakespeare teacher mentorship program
  • Dance and debating (both within BEPS and with other schools)
  • Performing on our mini-stage in the performing arts space
  • Creating podcasts and radio shows
  • Exploring drama and music from diverse social, cultural, and historical contexts
  • Ongoing connections with local secondary school drama and music programs.

Brunswick East Primary School acknowledges the over 85,000 years of care and Custodianship of the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation for the lands and waters that it resides on. We pay respect to Wurundjeri Elders, past and present, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Their sovereignty has never been ceded and this always was and always will be Aboriginal Land. We live, learn, and gather as a community on Wurundjeri Land and commit ourselves as Aboriginal people, Torres Strait Islander people, and allies for today and future generations, walking together.
