At Brunswick East Primary School, we aim to help every student develop a positive attitude toward mathematics. We want them to see maths not just as a subject but as an interesting discipline with a rich history and real-world applications. Through explicit and engaging lessons in line with the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 requirements, our Mathematics program is designed to give students the foundation they need to succeed in their personal, academic, and professional lives.
Whether they pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, arts, or other fields, the maths skills they develop at BEPS will set them up for success in an ever-changing world.
Connecting learning to the world around us
Mathematics is everywhere! Our students learn how maths connects to different areas of life, including science, geography, history, and the mathematics of First Nations cultures. By seeing how maths is applied across subjects, students develop a deeper understanding of the world and the ways in which mathematical ideas shape the natural and human world.
Early years focus: play and exploration
For our youngest learners (F-2), we use play-based learning, alongside the explicit teaching of mathematics skills, to engage curiosity and build foundational mathematical skills. This approach aligns with the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework (VEYLDF) and sets a strong foundation for future learning.
Mathematics structure
The curriculum is organised into 6 interrelated strands. The strands group the content descriptions, to provide a focus and clear sequence for the development of related concepts and skills across levels.
The 6 strands are:
- Number
- Algebra
- Measurement
- Space
- Statistics
- Probability (commencing at Level 3).
The Proficiencies of understanding, fluency, reasoning and problem-solving are embedded in all 6 strands, and further students’ development of increasingly sophisticated knowledge and understanding of mathematical concepts and problem-solving skills.
