Learning Communities

Communities of learners

At Brunswick East Primary School, children and teachers work together as communities of learners. In fact, our class organisation is based around mixed-age groupings in flexible spaces known as Learning Communities.

At BEPS, we teach in teams to ensure we can meet your child’s needs. Learning sessions happen both inside and outside the classroom, combining explicit teaching with hands-on learning and real-life learning experiences.

Students are often working in small groups to engage in collaborative investigation and discussion, which helps develop a strong sense of belonging and connection to community.

Students learn to listen carefully, communicate respectfully, challenge their own thinking, support the thinking of others, and engage with peers in an inclusive manner. They gain the confidence to speak up about things that matter to them and grow socially in a safe, encouraging environment.

BEPS encourages critical thinking, and we expect all members of the community – both children and adults – to treat each other with respect. BEPS students are engaged and enthusiastic about their own learning, challenging themselves and inspiring each other.

Learning Communities for 2025

Brunswick East Primary School acknowledges the over 85,000 years of care and Custodianship of the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation for the lands and waters that it resides on. We pay respect to Wurundjeri Elders, past and present, and to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Their sovereignty has never been ceded and this always was and always will be Aboriginal Land. We live, learn, and gather as a community on Wurundjeri Land and commit ourselves as Aboriginal people, Torres Strait Islander people, and allies for today and future generations, walking together.
