Student Wellbeing and Inclusion

At Brunswick East, we are committed to ensuring the mental health and wellbeing of every student, creating a nurturing, inclusive, and supportive environment where all children can thrive. We offer a variety of programs and supports to meet the unique needs of our diverse community.

Dedicated Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader

BEPS has a dedicated Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader to oversee a range of programs designed to support our students’ emotional, social, and academic development.

They work closely with our school leadership and staff to embed whole-school strategies for mental health and wellbeing.

School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support

At the core of our wellbeing approach is School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support, a framework that promotes positive behaviour and safe, supportive learning environments. School-Wide Positive Behaviour Supporthelps us develop clear expectations for behaviour, fostering a school culture where students feel respected and encouraged.

This system is neurodiversity-affirming, ensuring that all students, regardless of their learning needs, are supported in ways that suit them. The framework provides tiered levels of support to ensure each student receives the right help based on their individual needs.

Small Group Wellbeing Programs

Students can participate in small group sessions focused on building positive relationships and supporting emotional development.

  • Friendship Groups: A play-based program that helps build social awareness, resilience and self-regulation skills.
  • Lego Serious Play Group: A hands-on program that promotes collaboration, decision making, problem solving, and communication skills.

These activities are especially beneficial for children who may need extra support with social interactions, teaching them skills like how to initiate conversations, ask to play, or express their feelings.

Lunchtime Clubs

We offer a variety of lunchtime clubs designed to foster positive social interactions and friendship-building. These clubs provide students with a safe space to connect with peers, practice social skills, and develop healthy relationships. Some of the lunchtime clubs include:

  • Senior and Junior Choir
  • Reading Club
  • Lego Club
  • Jewellery Club
  • Relaxation Club
  • Documentary Club

Disability Inclusion

BEPS is deeply committed to creating an inclusive learning environment for all students, including those who require additional support. Our Disability Inclusion Leader plays a key role in ensuring students with diverse needs receive the appropriate support and adjustments. This includes applying for funding to provide extra resources, working with teachers to create individualised learning plans, and ensuring students receive the right level of assistance.

Zen Dens and Neuro-Affirming Spaces

Each learning community at our school has a Zen Den, a quiet, non-stimulating space designed to help students who need a sensory break. These spaces are equipped with sensory mats, bean bags, and other calming tools to help students regulate their emotions and manage sensory overload. These Zen Dens are easily accessible and located within sight of the classroom teacher, allowing students to retreat when needed without missing out on class activities.

Support from External Providers

We work closely with external providers to offer additional support for our students. Our team can connect families with local providers who work onsite as to minimise disruption to students and families.

Supporting Families

At Brunswick East Primary School, we recognise the importance of collaboration between school and home. Our wellbeing programs are designed to support not only the children but also their families. We keep families informed of any support programs their child is involved in, and work with them to create individualised plans for students who need extra help.

Our goal is to provide every student with the support and resources they need to succeed, emotionally, socially, and academically. By fostering a strong sense of belonging and inclusion, we ensure that each child feels valued, supported, and capable of achieving their best.

The community of Brunswick East Primary School respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Owners of the land on which we gather and learn, and pays respect to the ongoing living cultures of First Peoples.
